Art was born January 24, 1944, in Junction City, Kansas to Arthur L. & Eunice (Wiley) Langvardt. He graduated from Manhattan High School in Kansas and Hastings College. He attended graduate school at the University of Maryland and then enlisted in the U. S. Army and served two years. After his discharge he graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Law. He practiced law for 42 years, 38 of which were in Hastings. Art loved the challenge of practicing law and defending the guarantees afforded by the Constitution.
Art was a lawyer with Langvardt, Valle & James in Hastings. He was a member of the Nebraska State Bar Association and Adams County Bar Association. He served on the Hastings Housing Authority and was President of the Nebraska Criminal Defense Attorneys Association.
Art was forever a student. He loved learning and found almost any topic to be an interesting one for discussion. Through his avid reading on a broad range of subjects, Art found plenty of foundational material for his colorful story-telling. His quick wit was unmatched. Those who knew him well—family members, his many long-time friends, and his close professional associates—recognized that softheartedness was one of Art’s most defining characteristics.
Art married Teresa Luther in 1980 and they had one child, Kristen.
Art was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Teresa Luther, of Doniphan, NE; his daughter Kristen Schwarz and her husband Chris and their two children Claire and Seth of Doniphan NE; his brothers and sister and their spouses, Alan and Sharon Langvardt of Beatrice, NE; Jayne and Scott Smith of Milliken, CO; Arlen and Mary Langvardt of Bloomington IN; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
