Hastings resident Irva Garnet Smith, 100, passed away Thursday, March 15, 2018, at Perkins Pavilion Good Samaritan Society-Hastings Village, Hastings, NE.
Celebration of Life is 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 20, at First Presbyterian Church in Hastings with Rev. Greg Allen-Pickett and Rev. Blake Tiemann officiating. Lunch in Fellowship Hall will follow.
Private family burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to First Presbyterian Church with “Irva Smith” in the subject line. These funds will be used to pay for scholarships for children to go to church camp. Visitation is Monday 6:30-8 p.m. with the family present at the funeral home.
Irva was born February 18, 1918, to Henry & Carrie (Feis) Bierhaus on a farm near Campbell, NE. She moved to Hastings with her parents and graduated from Hastings High School in 1936. On November 29, 1940, she married R. Howard Smith. After attending Hastings Business College for a brief time, she worked as a secretary for Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation System (Tri-County Project), Foote Ophthalmology, and Dutton Lainson Company. She spent her happiest working years serving as Dr. Silas Kessler’s secretary at First Presbyterian Church. Irva and Howard enjoyed traveling with the state and national Holiday Rambler Clubs.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church where she served as a church elder, clerk of the session, was active in the women’s association and taught Sunday school. She was also a member of the Friendly Dozen Extension group.
Irva was preceded in death by her parents; husband, R. Howard Smith; and sister and brother-in-law, Melzie and Harold Miller.
