Dear First Presbyterian Church Family:
In this email you will find links to the Monday Check-In, our Forum from last Sunday on politics and polarization, a preview of this Sunday’s forum, and an invitation to get involved. Tomorrow I will send out an email with updates about COVID-19 and in-person worship.

MONDAY CHECK-IN

It’s back! After a two-week hiatus, Pastor Damen and I recorded our Monday Check-In yesterday. This is a short, informal Bible Study podcast/broadcast where we preview and reflect on the scripture that will be preached on Sunday. Join us for this fun, light-hearted look at Revelation 7:9-17 and Mathew 5:1-2. To listen to it like a radio broadcast or download it as a podcast, click here: https://soundcloud.com/damen-heitmann/102620-monday-check-in  If you prefer to see our smiling faces, you can watch it on YouTube by clicking here: https://youtu.be/2I9ruVeYfyo

FORUM ON “POLITICS, POLARIZATION, AND FAITH”

Last Sunday, Dr. Bob Amyot, political science professor at Hastings College and member of FPC Hastings, presented an adult education forum entitled, “When Faith Meets Politics: Polarization.” He reflected on the current political climate as it relates to faith. If you’d like to hear what he had to say, you can listen to the forum like a radio broadcast or download it like a podcast by clicking here: https://soundcloud.com/damen-heitmann/when-faith-meets-politics-polarization  If you’d prefer to see Dr. Amyot and the other participants, as well as see his slides, you can watch the forum on YouTube by clicking here: https://youtu.be/GVn67fAtcY0

FORUM THIS SUNDAY ON “WHEN FAITH MEETS POLITICS: WILLIAM JENNINGS BRYAN”

Our two-part examination of when faith meets politics continues! Dr. Catherine Biba of Hastings College, will take a look at the life and times of William Jennings Bryan. The one-time presidential nominee and Secretary of State under Woodrow Wilson had a long political career. In addition, Jennings Bryan was also a devout person of faith. Dr. Biba will explore the ways this political and religious leanings influence one another. Please join us at 9:15am on Sunday, Nov 1 live via Zoom by clicking on this link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84337329785   This forum will also be recorded and posted to our church’s YouTube page if you can’t be there in on Sunday morning.

HEIRS APPARENT ADULT EDUCATION CLASS/SMALL GROUP

Our other Adult Education class, Heirs Apparent, has begun meeting via Zoom on Sunday mornings at 9:15am. They are studying an Adam Hamilton book entitled “Seeing Gray in a World of Black and White” that reflects on religion, morality and politics. If you would like to join this study, please email or call the church office to get the Zoom link.

This is just a glimpse at all of the amazing things going on at First Presbyterian Church of Hastings, even in these crazy times. We hope that you will find a way to plug in and join us as we seek to grow in our faith and live the love of Christ in the world.

Your Servant in Christ,

Pastor Greg
